The Nancy Lou Story
🧵 The Story of Grandma Nancy Lou
Where Buttermints began…
Long before Buttermints became the melt-in-your-mouth treat they are today, there was a little kitchen on the edge of a quiet prairie town — and a woman named Nancy Lou.
Nancy Lou wasn’t just any grandmother. She wore aprons dusted with flour, kept recipes in her head (and on napkins), and believed the best desserts didn’t need to be fancy — just made with love, cream, and a little magic.
One chilly afternoon, sometime in the late 1950s, Nancy Lou decided to whip up something sweet for the town’s fall harvest social. She wanted a candy that was soft and buttery, but with a cool, meltaway finish. So, she stirred and stirred — real butter, pure sugar, and a whisper of peppermint — until the kitchen smelled like heaven and the batch was just right.
That first batch was a hit. Soft, creamy, and impossibly smooth, her buttermints melted on the tongue like nothing anyone had ever tasted. Folks asked for them at weddings, holidays, and Sunday suppers — and Nancy Lou never said no.
Over the years, her secret recipe was passed down, handwritten with love and a few smudges, until it reached us — her family — who decided it was time to share her legacy with the world.
Today, every Buttermint we make is a tribute to Grandma Nancy Lou’s original recipe. We still use the creamiest ingredients. We still believe in small batches. And most of all — we still believe the best candy is made the old-fashioned way: with care, kindness, and a whole lot of butter.
